So... if your supervisor notices you reading a magazine and says something like "If you're caught up with closing duties, we've got quite a backlog of carts." It doesn't necessarily mean "Why aren't you working you lazy slacker." However if your immediate reaction is to get angry and super defensive, it makes it kind of hard to swallow the excuse that you were only looking at the magazine for a second. I wasn't trying to call you out, or put you down or anything like that. I didn't want to have say anything to my supervisor, but I'll probably have to now. So even though I doubt you read this, I'm going to address all of your concerns while they are still fresh in my memory: 1) "I was only looking for a minute": I don't care if you were only looking for a second, or spent 5 minutes. When we're way behind the proper methodology isn't to slack off. I was trying to be diplomatic and give you an easy out to get back to work. 2) "I think you follow me around and watch me to catch me out.": Not particularly. I mean, part of my job is being aware of what the other staff are doing on the floor. Part of it is being aware of what's going on in the library. We just had a patron banned for theft, and earlier this same day we had a different patron harassing someone in the bathroom, and yesterday had been pretty crazy too so I've kind been on high alert. Even when I'm not I try and take a quick look around the floor every 10-20 minutes. And when I go to the stacks regardless of the reason I look around. And of course I'm supposed to walk around the building a time or two every shift as well. So yeah, I tend to be aware of what's going on in the library, and it's kind of surprising how often you are slacking off when I happen to walk by whilst helping a patron. And it's also kind of surprising how often you finish your "mini-break" just as soon you spot me glancing in your direction. 3)"I'm going to watch you and next time you are looking at a book I'm going to tell you.": By all means, as long as you don't stop working in the meantime. If you're looking around, hopefully you'll see more than just what I'm doing and being alert to what is going on in the library can only be a good thing. And I'll be honest, I really don't like telling other people to work. I always feel a little hypocritical as I'm kind of bad about looking at the book jacket of interesting books or flipping through a coffee table book on occasion. On the other hand, I can promise you, if I get caught goofing off I'll own up to it, and I won't bite your head off. So yes, please, help me keep on the straight and narrow. However when I politely acknowledge my error and get back to work please understand that I will expect the same behavior from you. 4)"Don't piss me off.": You know what, no. I don't like telling people what to do, it's not what I signed up for. However you DID sign up to work. You have NO RIGHT to get angry at someone (ANYONE) telling you to do work. Just because I'm a bit of a softy doesn't mean you can walk all over me. I'm not a babysitter. I end up doing a bit of that w/ some of the patrons, but I shouldn't have to do it for my cow-orkers. There is ALWAYS something that needs doing, especially as we become shorter and shorter staffed. Know however, if you don't do your job, and you're going to get pissed off when I politely and diplomatically suggest something that needs doing then you are in the wrong. I suggest in fact you've got it backwards. You should strive not to piss me off. You've tried my patience QUITE a bit. I tend to overlook your slacker ways... It's not like anything we have to do is physically taxing. If you're going to be a bitch about it I can be a bitch right back. It's your job. |

Also, finished zelda. Not really all that much better in HD, but a noticable improvement. Definatly a bit much jaggies, but oh well. Fingers crossed Metroid will be 480p, and look unbelievable. (:
Second day of work this year* (neener neener all you non-Gov't employees) and both days have been insanely busy. Plus new computer system that doesn't do lots of things the previous one did, and we're all unfamiliar with, so everything takes longer too. Oh well.
*Okay, so I worked at my second job some too. FNG doesn't really count though, that's more of "stay in one place for ten hours and make sure no one burns the place down" then a job. (; |

| | Thom Yorke - And it rained all night | ] | Woo! I finally got my last christmas present, to wit the first of the Sandman graphic novels. Having read it, I desperately need to re-read the rest of the series. Sadly I just bought The Tick vs. Season One on DVD (Hurrah, Finally!) so have kind of expended my luxury budget for the month, especially if I plan on getting Rayman's Raving Rabbits and a laptop.
I've been playing a LOT of EVE. Things are going pretty good, though I think Conrad's getting ahead of himself in his plans in machinations. We shall see. I need to go finish Twilight Princess, but I'm kinda of putting it off, as I'll be getting component cables on Monday, and I'd really like to see the difference. And with as many exciting and engaging projects coming up, I doubt I'll play through the game a second time anytime soon.
I've also been playing the new Dawn of War a fair bit, though sadly, not anywhere near as much as my roommate (not really all that bitter that he got me a christmas present that was as much for himself).
Also just started reading The God Delusion. As a Devout Agnostic, I'm fairly unsurprised to see him ripping on my choice as much (if not more) then those who choose to blindly follow the god(s) of their parents. Mmmmmeh.
Anyways, work all day tomorrow, so best get to sleep. |
